About Unagi

If you’re wandering through Kyoto and crave a spot that feels both authentic and welcoming, Unagi is one place you’ll want to check out. Nestled at 90-4 Murasakino Unrinincho in the Kita Ward, this cozy restaurant has built a reputation for delivering a classic Japanese dining experience without any pretension. From the moment you step inside, the vibe immediately sets the tone-relaxed yet vibrant, with subtle touches that make it feel like a local favorite while still being approachable for visitors. The interior isn’t flashy, but it’s carefully arranged to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that encourages lingering over a meal and enjoying the company of friends or family.

Unagi focuses primarily on dine-in service, which makes sense given how much care goes into the presentation and preparation of each dish. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, sip on a cold beer or a carefully selected alcoholic beverage, and really soak in the surroundings. There’s no delivery option, which actually works in its favor, because it ensures that every dish reaches you at the perfect temperature, preserving the delicate flavors and textures that make Japanese cuisine so unique.

The menu highlights classic options, with an emphasis on quality and freshness. The offerings pair beautifully with the selection of drinks, especially for those who enjoy a beer alongside their meal. Even if you’re just stopping by for a casual bite, there’s a comforting sense of ritual in the way the food is served, showing that Unagi is more than just a place to eat-it’s a space where the details matter and every element contributes to the overall experience.

Another thing that stands out is the staff, who are friendly without being overbearing. They’re attentive and knowledgeable, ready to guide you through the menu or recommend a drink that complements your order. This level of service makes dining here feel personal and thoughtful, rather than rushed or mechanical. Whether you’re a local or a traveler exploring Kyoto’s culinary scene, Unagi provides a chance to enjoy an unhurried meal, where the focus is on savoring every bite and appreciating the simple joys of dining in a space designed for comfort and connection.

We were the only foreigners in the place but the staff were very helpful and welcoming! The food was top notch. If you want unagi don, come here! We loved it. The atmosphere was nice too. We waited for about ten minutes to get a table, there was a waiting list outside to write name and party size. Highly highly recommend.

I adore unagi dish at this local restaurant very much. Probably the best I’ve ever had, texture of the skin is perfect and the meat is so tender with sweetness; the combination of both is remarkable. I often put sansho pepper when eating unagi, I didn’t want to this time, so it doesn’t disturb natural taste of the Ingredients. Unagi is a summer dish local people eat, not sure for what exact reason, I guess it helps body to overcome the scorching heat. In comparison to the way how unagi dish is made in Kanto region, I prefer it here in Kansai, simple without frills. Would go back again before they close for the season.

Great place. The food and atmosphere were 10/10 and the staff was super nice and helpful, even when I managed to spill my soup all over.
